The Canaries have barely been active in the transfer market so far, having only added Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden on loan for the 2022-23 Championship season, whilst no big names have departed from Carrow Road yet.
The loan market is set to be explored once again though as Sara looks set to arrive in Norfolk on a temporary deal.
Quiz: 20 statements about former Norwich City players – Are they true or false?
As reported by The Athletic on Wednesday night, Norwich were in talks with Sao Paulo to bring Sara, who featured 29 times in Brazil’s top flight last season, in on a loan deal with an option or obligation to purchase next summer.
Now, reports from Sara’s native country are stating that the deal is close to being finalised, although no loan is mentioned and a fee of around €10.8 million – which equates to £9.1 million – is set to be paid for the 23-year-old, who has played just once in the Brazilian Série A in 2022 after undergoing ankle surgery in April.
The number 10 role is an area that Norwich definitely need to strengthen this summer, so on paper, Sara is a good addition.
Risks do come with signing players like Sara though, as there is no guarantee that he will be able to cope with the physicality of the English game – specifically the Championship.
It would make a lot more sense if the deal was a loan move with the option to buy permanently next summer, although there seems to be a bit of confusion currently as to how the deal will be structured.
Sara’s seemingly imminent arrival almost certainly spells the end for Todd Cantwell though, with speculation over his future not going away in a hurry.
