Norwich City have announced the appointment of David Wright to the position of under-23 coach at Carrow Road, announced the club on their official website

Wright had been temporarily in charge of the side after Matt Gill had left the club in the summer to join Paul Hurst's backroom staff at Ipswich Town.

And, after impressing in the role, the former Norwich midfielder will takeover under-23 duties on a permanent basis whilst the club search for a replacement at under-18 level.

As a player, Wright made the move to Carrow Road in November 2005 on a short-term loan from Wigan Athletic, only staying in East Anglia for a month, making just five appearances.

It was actually with the club's fierce rivals that Wright found the most success, making 128 appearances for Ipswich between 2007 and 2010 scoring five goals and assisting eight more.

Now, it is Norwich who are flying at the moment and sit top of the Championship table with 21 matches played on 43 points, one clear of second-placed Leeds United and six clear of third-placed Sheffield United.

The Verdict

He may have only been there for a short time, but coaches who have played for the club are always a good idea in my book.

He will have an important job for the rest of the season as well.

With matches coming thick and fast, the squad will need to remain in peak condition to make use of the entirety of it and under-23 games will be crucial.
