Josh Murphy has taken to his personal Twitter account to deliver a message of congratulations to his Norwich City teammate, Angus Gunn, who has received a call-up to the England senior squad for the first time in his career.

The Norwich goalkeeper was set to spend time with England’s under-21 squad during this week’s international break, but a series of injuries to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad, including Jack Butland, has opened the door for Gunn to make the step up for the midweek clash with Brazil.

Murphy, who like Gunn, has been a key part of Daniel Farke’s Norwich squad in the Sky Bet Championship this season, has taken to Twitter after his teammate received his latest call-up, saying:

Gunn is likely to provide cover for Joe Hart and Jordan Pickford, who were both named in Southgate’s squad that drew 0-0 with Germany at Wembley on Friday evening.

A senior call-up for Gunn is well earned, with the on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper enjoying a fine start to his spell with Norwich in the Championship.

The 21-year-old has made 16 Championship appearances for the Canaries, keeping seven clean sheets, helping Norwich to 13th in the table heading into this week’s international break.

The Verdict

This is a proud moment for Gunn, but also Norwich, and it is clear that everyone associated with the Canaries is delighted to hear about Gunn’s selection in the senior England squad.

Murphy’s message indicates that, and although the likelihood is Gunn will just be providing cover for Hart and Pickford, it will still be an excellent opportunity for the goalkeeper.
