Norwich and Bristol City enter race for Aston Villa target

Aston Villa face competition from a trio of Championship clubs in the race to land Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone on loan, according to The Daily Mail.

Wigan Athletic, Norwich City and Bristol City are all rivalling Villa for the 23-year-old’s signature this January.

Sam Johnstone is currently the third choice goalkeeper at Premier League giants Manchester United with David De Gea and Sergio Romero above him in the pecking order so a January loan exit could be on the cards.

Jose Mourinho rates the former England youth international very highly and is reluctant to let him leave permanently so Aston Villa have been in talks over a loan move.

Steve Bruce wants to boost his goalkeeper options at Villa Park after Jed Steer suffered a season-ending injury and Mark Bunn also suffered a setback.

But while they struggle to agree on terms, Norwich, Bristol City and Wigan are all hoping to swoop in first.
