Northampton Town could be the first team in the Football League to get promoted this season, if they can manage a victory against fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol Rovers.
They are currently 16 points ahead of Plymouth Argyle in fourth place, a gap that if they can maintain after this weekend would be enough to guarantee them a promotion spot.
It won’t be an easy feat, though, since the Gas are currently sitting in third place equal on points (71) with Plymouth and Accrington Stanley, in a situation where every point counts to get the coveted third spot.
With Oxford United in second place just two points above them, four teams will be competing for just two automatic promotion places, making it a fierce race that will undoubtedly go down to the wire.
Nevertheless, there is no reason to suggest that Chris Wilder’s men can’t do it this weekend. Their league form has been nothing short of extraordinary this season.
Northampton have lost only one league match since mid-October and are currently on a nineteen-match unbeaten streak, albeit having drawn five out of their last eight.
Northampton have been the Football League’s most dominant side in their own division this season and expectations and optimism is high at the club.
There is little doubt that Northampton will eventually get promoted to League One after a seven-year hiatus and, having seen the style in which they have done it, it’s hard to imagine that they won’t be one of their new division’s top teams, especially considering how Burton Albion have fared this season after their own promotion.
