Leeds United have had serious problems with their goalkeeping position this season wth Andy Lonergan now the number one between the sticks.
Having got rid of Rob Green in the summer, Thomas Christiansen identified Felix Wiedwald as the man to replace him however a string of mistakes meant that the boss had little choice but to replace the German with experienced back-up Lonergan who also joined this summer.
The 6ft 4 ex-Wolves man made two glaring errors at Brentford before the international break but kept his place for the visit of Middlesbrough yesterday.
Leeds won the game 2-1 with Lonergan only beaten from the spot after a very harsh penalty decision was awarded to Garry Monk’s men. And, in truth, the 34-year old wasn’t tested too much with Boro wasteful in the final third.
However, Lonergan didn’t convince at times with his handling of crosses, opting to punch on several occasions and here’s how the Whites fans reacted to his performance yesterday.
In retrospect – absolutely right to start Lonergan today. He's had one wobbly game while Felix has had several. Normal service resumed. Well done Andy. #lufc

Get Felix back in, though. Lonergan's punches were poor and his kicks were only giving them the ball. It does us no good. #LUFC

Not just you mate. I'm totally unconvinced by both 'keepers. Wiedwald can still learn, hopefully, but it's one of our weakest positions, alongside LB, LW and up top.

I'm not usually one to have a go at the GK, but Lonergan isn't good enough. Worst bit of business in the summer was letting Green go #lufc

Does Lonergan get a bonus for punching crosses? #LUFC

Still hasn’t really sunk in that Andy Lonergan is somehow our first choice keeper again. #lufc
