Kenny Jackett was full of praise for his young players after they beat managerless Fleetwood to move within a point of the League One play-off spots.

Pompey were without six first team players for the long trip up north and have been on a poor run.

Goals from Jamal Lowe and Ollie Hawkins were enough to earn Jackett's side a win, despite a late consolation from Conor McAleny.

Lowe joined Pompey from Hemel Hempstead last year, whilst Hawkins was a summer deadline day signing from National League side Dagenham and Redbridge.

The win might only have been  Pompey's second in ten matches, but in secured vital points as they hunt back to back promotions.

Speaking to the BBC, Jackett couldn't contain his delight: "Looking at that side, the players who've come in have done very well to create partnerships. I was pleased with the attitude of a young side that showed very, very good promise."

Hawkins hit four in five shortly after his arrival, but has got just eight for the season as he continues to settle in.

It was only Lowe's second goal since September when he scored a brace in the 4-1 win against Fleetwood at Fratton Park, but he took it well and showed glimpses of the quality that convinced Pompey to pluck him from the National League South little over a year ago.

Whilst the two aren't prolific at the moment, they're both young and still developing their game, but if the Fleetwood match is anything to go by, they may well have the necessary credentials to keep Pompey in the promotion frame.

The Verdict

Lowe and Hawkins have the potential to become a very good front pairing.

Lowe is quick and agile, he formed such a deadly partnership with Nicke Kabamba at Hemel that Pompey signed him too, although he's currently on loan at Aldershot.

Hawkins is a stereotypical target man, but he's also alert with a keen eye for goal. Football is a simple business, you score goals and you win games and in these two players, Portsmouth could well find goals.
