Noel Whelan reacts to Leeds United’s reported interest in signing defender

It has previously been reported by French media outlet L’Equipe that Leeds United were interested in signing AS Saint-Étienne defender Harold Moukoudi on loan for the remainder of the season.

The Cameroon international has struggled for game time in this year’s league campaign with AS Saint-Étienne, and has made just 15 appearances in total this term.

Leeds are currently sat second in the Championship table, and have added some quality to their side in the last month, with RB Leipzig striker Jean-Kevin Augustin being the latest player to sign along the dotted line at Elland Road.

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, former Leeds man Noel Whelan highlighted the importance of getting transfer business done early into the transfer window, and insisted that Leeds will have to act fast with any potential incomings.

“You can only get in what you can get in.

“They’ve left everything very, very late – there’s no doubt about that. They have to work very, very quickly now.”

Whelan went on to admit that he has thought about the prospect of signing another defender in the near future, with Kalvin Phillips suspended after being dismissed in their defeat against QPR earlier this month.

Marcelo Bielsa has already revealed in a recent pre-match press conference that Ben White is set to be pushed into the CDM role, which vacates a space for a defender to come in for their next game against Millwall on Tuesday.

“You’ve got Kalvin Phillips suspended now for three games, we know we’ve played Ben White in that position before, so will it be a case of getting this centre-half in and he goes straight in alongside Liam Cooper?

“We do know that the Cameroonians are very physical, usually very quick, so it’ll be interesting to see how that one plays out.”

The Leeds boss has also revealed that there won’t be any further business conducted by his side this month, although it remains to be seen if that could change if the right player becomes available.

The Verdict:

I don’t think Leeds will be making anymore signings in this month’s transfer window.

I think they’ll be able to cope without Phillips for the next three games as Gaeteno Berardi can come into the defence alongside Liam Cooper, with Ben White moving into the CDM role.

The Whites have really impressed me this season, but Marcelo Bielsa will know that his side simply have to improve their results if they’re to avoid slipping out of the automatic promotion places.

They’ve already made three signings in this transfer window, and I think that’ll be good enough to see them win a long-awaited promotion into the Premier League this term.
