Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has spoken about the possibility of Leeds United re-signing Fabian Delph from Manchester City this summer.

The former Whites star is obviously no stranger to those at Elland Road, having made over 50 appearances for the club after emerging through the youth ranks.

Delph then moved onto Aston Villa in 2009, and has since gone on to be a huge success at the Etihad Stadium with Manchester City, winning two Premier League titles with Pep Guardiola's side.

But now, Delph has been linked with a move back to Elland Road, with The Sun claiming that Leeds are weighing up a huge £15million bid for the versatile midfielder.

Speaking to Football Insider about Leeds' chances of signing Delph, however, Whelan claimed that he would rather spend the money on "four or five different players", despite hailing the 29-year-old as an "exceptional" player.

He said: "There is a tight wage structure at Leeds and Fabian Delph’s salary doesn’t fit into it.

"£80,000-a-week would get us four or five different players, we can’t give it all to one players. It’s very unlikely to happen."

Leeds fan will be hoping for a big summer, with Marcelo Bielsa's side looking to right their wrongs and win promotion to the Premier League next season, having missed out this time around.

The Verdict

I couldn't agree more with Whelan in this case, as financially, this would be a nightmare of a signing for Leeds.

Unless Delph a major pay cut to move to Elland Road, then it would be a strange move, and you just cannot see it happening whatsoever.

He would be an excellent signing for Leeds, but at this stage of his career, he will surely be looking to stay at City, or stay in the Premier League at least.
