Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has taken aim at goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell after the youngster admitted he might have to look elsewhere for first-team football.

The Leeds stopper was quoted this week as saying he will seek pastures new if there is no first-team football on offer at Elland Road, but these comments have not gone down well with former Whites ace Whelan, who slammed the youngster for 'threatening' the club.

“There’s no guarantee, you’ve got to work for your place. Coming out and putting the club under fire like that, in a little bit of a threatening way, pushing his own place, I think it’s wrong", Whelan told Football Insider.

“I understand you want to play, but that’s not the way you do it, he’s threatening the club. He’s still under contract with Leeds United, whatever happens, happens, rather than kicking up a fuss on Sky Sports News."

Peacock-Farrell lost his place in the team mid-way through the season when the club moved to sign Spanish stopper Kiko Casilla, but after number of unconvincing displays by the Spaniard towards the end of the season, Peacock-Farrell was still ignored by manager Marcelo Bielsa.

However, despite being clearly unhappy at his lack of playing time, Whelan wasn't impressed, and questioned further why the youngster came public with such comments.

“That shouldn’t have been coming out publicly. That should have been between manager, chairman and player. It’s forceful, it forces the hand of Leeds United.” added Whelan.

Peacock-Farrell was guilty of the odd clanger himself throughout the season as Leeds struggled to get a solid and reliable number one. With Marcelo Bielsa now set to stay, and Casilla's own future up the in air, Peacock-Farrell will no doubt hope for good news over the summer regarding his place in the squad.

The Verdict

I agree with Whelan here to be honest.

You are a young player still trying to make waves in the game and let's be honest, you weren't all that impressive when you were given your chance.

For the stopper to come out and call the club out is out of order for me, and it wouldn't surprise me if Bielsa does move him on and bring someone else in.
