It could be an interesting summer transfer window ahead for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers, with uncertainty remaining over the future of star man Alfredo Morelos.
If Morelos was to depart Ibrox in the summer, then it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Gerrard move quickly in trying to find an adequate replacement for Morelos, who has been a key player for Rangers for a number of seasons now.
Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, former Leeds man Noel Whelan stated that Rangers should be looking at signing Liverpool youngster Rhian Brewster on loan next season.
“Gerrard needs striking options. Defoe is coming to the back end of his career and I think Morelos will leave.
“Brewster might be the key player that Steven thinks he can take for a year. He is a fox in the box and that is what teams want.”
Brewster is currently playing his football in England with Championship side Swansea City, where he has scored four league goals so far this season, as they look to challenge for a top-six finish in the second tier.
Whelan went on to admit that the potential of Brewster playing alongside former Liverpool team-mate Ryan Kent could tempt him with a move to Rangers.
“Let him have that full preseason with the team and get bedded in. With the likes of Ryan Kent, who Rhian will already know, that relationship will ease him in and of course, he will know Steven as well.
“Steven will know what kind of character and quality he is getting from the player.”
Can you score full marks on this Rangers quiz?
I think he could be a good signing for Rangers next season.
I’ll admit that I had my doubts as to whether he’d be good enough to adjust to the step down to the Championship this season, but Brewster has proven me wrong and played his part in Swansea City’s push for the play-offs.
It’s going to be a summer transfer window of uncertainty surrounding Alfredo Morelos’ future at Rangers, so Steven Gerrard will surely be looking at signing another striker in the near future.
He’s obviously got a good relationship with Liverpool, so a move for Brewster would be a smart move by the Gers boss.
