Leeds United were dealt a frustrating injury blow with Liam Cooper withdrawing from the squad to take on Sheffield Wednesday.

Gaetano Berardi stepped into the side in the captain's place, and he put in an impressive performance for the Whites as they took control in the race for promotion to the Premier League.

But Cooper could be set to return to action when Leeds take on Wigan this week, and it gives Marcelo Bielsa a welcome selection dilemma heading into the game.

Former Leeds United striker, Noel Whelan has weighed in with his verdict on who should be partnering Pontus Jansson in the centre of the Leeds defence.

In an interview with Football Insider, Whelan is expecting Cooper to come straight back into the starting XI in place of Berardi if he is deemed fit for the game on Good Friday.

"If Cooper is fit he plays, absolutely. Berardi did remarkably well against Wednesday but Cooper has been one of Leeds’ best players this season."

The 44-year-old outlined the attributes that Cooper brings to the Leeds team, and labelled his partnership with Pontus Jansson as 'outstanding'.

"He has really improved and his defensive partnership with Jansson has been outstanding.

"He is the leader, adds height  and his left-footedness also gives the defence a nice balance through a fantastic range of passing, especially with those diagonal balls to Pablo Hernandez on the right."

It could potentially be a tricky fixture for Leeds, as they come up against a Wigan side that will be in desperate need of a vital three points to ease their relegation fears this season.

But there's no doubting that if Bielsa's men are on form, then they should have no problem in finding a way through the Latics defence on Friday.

The Verdict:

I'd be surprised if this came true.

Berardi really impressed me in the win over Sheffield Wednesday and he hardly put a foot wrong, so he's more than deserving of a chance to retain his place in the starting XI.

Marcelo Bielsa surely won't want to change a winning team at such a crucial stage of the season?
