Leeds United are set for an interesting summer ahead, with changes likely to occur at Elland Road as they prepare for another season in the Championship.

Marcelo Bielsa's side missed out on promotion to the Premier League as they fell to a shock defeat to Derby County in their play-off semi-final.

It means that departures could be on the cards, as Marcelo Bielsa looks to sign player suited to his style of football, and move some of his current playing squad on before the season gets underway in August.

In an interview with Football Insider, former Leeds striker, Noel Whelan feels that the club should sell Adam Forshaw in the summer, with the midfielder struggling at times in this year's campaign.

"We could get big money for Forshaw, I don’t see how his value has gone down. We have not seen the best of him at Leeds and he is one worth considering to sell, definitely."

But Whelan also felt that his ideal replacement is already at the club, in Jamie Shackleton who has impressed since being given a chance in the first-team.

"I think we also have the ideal ready-made replacement in Jamie Shackleton, who plays the central midfield role better than Forshaw. He has more energy and is better going forward and on the ball. He’s younger and better.

"For me, Shackleton for Forshaw all day long. I would get him starting next season, definitely."

The Elland Road faithful will be hoping that their side can make a long-awaited return to the Premier League next season, after narrowly missing out on promotion this season via the play-offs.

The Verdict:

I have to agree with Whelan here.

Shackleton has been excellent towards the end of the season, and it begs the question as to why he hasn't been starting ahead of Forshaw for the majority of this year's campaign.

Leeds should cash in on Forshaw and build their team around Shackleton as they challenge for promotion next season.
