Leeds United have recently announced that Kalvin Phillips has signed a new deal with the club to keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2024.

Phillips has been a regular in the starting XI under Marcelo Bielsa in recent seasons, and will be hoping that he can win promotion to the Premier League this season.

In an interview with Football Insider, former Leeds man Noel Whelan issued his thoughts on Phillips' new deal with the club, and labelled it as 'a massive signing'.

"It’s a massive signing, huge. This is the best business Leeds have done all summer, all year, in fact.

"Without Kalvin Phillips the team would suffer and Leeds needed to reward him with a new and improved deal. He was probably the best player last season, apart from possibly Pablo Hernandez, and he has his best years ahead of him.

Whelan is confident that Phillips could force his way into a Premier League side in the future, and has all the right attributes to succeed at the very top.

"He is so good now, he could go to a Premier League club and have no problem getting in the team. He is young, hungry, and his character, personality and ability is exceptional.

"He is the most valuable player at the club and the one Leeds needed to keep above all others. I’m delighted we’re keeping him, delighted for Kalvin and delighted from Leeds’ point of view."

Phillips will be hoping to put in a strong performance when Leeds are next in action against Barnsley on Saturday, in what could be a potentially tricky test for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

The Verdict:

It's probably the best bit of business Leeds will do all season.

Phillips has been a key member of Marcelo Bielsa's squad in recent years, and the club will be delighted to have the midfielder commit his future to the Whites.

Even if he is to move on in the future, Leeds will be able to name their price for any clubs that are interested in signing him.
