Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan has stated that the club must get a striker on their books, having mentioned Matej Vydra as a possible target once more.

The Whites have won just one game in their last seven matches and the gap between themselves and third has slipped from 11 points to just six.

Leeds suffered a blow earlier in the window when Eddie Nketiah was recalled by Arsenal and that has left the club with just one striker in their first-team squad - Patrick Bamford.

Whelan has expressed that the position of a striker has to be a priority and that he keeps hearing Vydra's name mentioned.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: “We keep hearing Vydra every season, it’s been three years now, we’ve been talking about Vydra.

“A striker through the middle needs to be the priority, we don’t need midfielders or widemen, we have an abundance of talent who can play in those positions, so we need a central striker, we have one on the books."

The Verdict

It would be a very good signing if they could bring Vydra to the squad. It would give Bamford some competition and make sure that the Leeds side has some real clinical finishers amongst their ranks.

They will be worried that they are slipping off again after just one win in seven, and if they don't make it to the Premier League this time around they may well look back and rue any business that they didn't get done in January.

There's a perfect opportunity to strengthen as they sit in second, this would mean that they could guarantee a place in the top division and achieve Marcelo Bielsa's ambition. Whelan bringing up Vydra suggests that he's a player that the former Leeds man would want to see at the club come the end of the transfer window.
