Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has been discussing the potential of a new contract for Swiss defender Gaetano Berardi.

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan said: "Everything depends on Premier League football.

"If we get to the Premier League, he wouldn't be a regular and he might be let go."

Promotion is on the agenda at Elland Road following the heartbreak of last season. Berardi who has become a cult hero at Leeds since arriving in 2014 has become a back up centre back under Bielsa stepping in when called upon.

"He has showed his quality and importance to the squad over the last month. He is strong, aggressive and totally committed. His distribution has also been fantastic at times," Whelan added.

Berardi has had his critics since joining the Whites, his disciplinary record does give him a bad reputation but his commitment and loyalty have won fans over.

Whelan also said: "He's almost more likely to be given a new contract if we stay in the Championship, as he would be needed if we are trying to get promoted."

Berardi has made five starts this campaign, stepping in for the injured Liam Cooper and managing to maintain the consistent solidity the Leeds back-line has shown this campaign.

The Verdict

Berardi's contract is up this summer and Bielsa is seemingly a big fan of the Swiss defender.

A player who can play in all of the defensive positions and has become a solid back up.

There is uncertainty of his future, more so with the club targeting the Premier League. Although a solid, committed performer, it is unlikely Berardi can make the adequate step up to the Premier League.
