Noel Whelan has urged Leeds United to sell Caleb Ekuban, as the striker closes in on a permanent move to Trabzonspor.

The 25-year-old is hoping to see his season-long loan move converted into a permanent transfer and has reportedly agreed personal terms to join the Turkish club.

Ekuban arrived at Elland Road from Italian side Chievo Verona on a four-year deal at the start of last season, but went on to make just 21 appearances for the Whites, scoring two goals.

The centre-forward failed to impress head coach Marcelo Bielsa ahead of this campaign and was sent out on loan to Turkey.

The Ghana striker has scored eight goals in 30 appearances for Trabzonspor so far this season and appears to be enjoying his time in Turkey.

Former Leeds striker Whelan has urged the Elland Road club to sell the striker as soon as possible.

“He’s not good enough to play for Leeds, we saw that last season," Whelan told Football Insider.

"He is surplus to requirements as we need a better quality of player. We don’t need him and I’m sure we will be pleased to get him off the wage bill.”

Leeds are currently involved in a Championship promotion battle with Sheffield United and have the chance to take a major step towards the Premier League by delivering back-to-back wins against Wigan Athletic and Brentford over the Easter weekend.

The Verdict:

Whelan is right. Ekuban proved with his performances last season that he is not good enough to play for Leeds and the club should look to move him on in the summer.

The striker is clearly not in Bielsa's plans for next season, so it makes no sense for him to remain at Elland Road.

A move makes sense for both the player and the club and the deal will probably be finalised over the next few weeks.
