Former Leeds forward Noel Whelan has hit out at Pontus Jansson, claiming he went 'missing' at key times for the Whites as they pushed for promotion.

The centre-back was a key player for Marcelo Bielsa's side over the past season, with the Argentinian boss even saying he was the best player at Elland Road.

However, Whelan, who now works as a pundit for BBC Leeds, doesn't agree, telling Football Insider that Jansson makes things about himself and that he should be moved on this summer.

"Get good money for him and get rid, Jansson is selfish and not as good as he thinks. There have been too many mistakes made by Pontus Jansson, too many times he has gone missing.

"He is not a talker out there, he is not a leader. Too many games I’ve seen him walk off in a huff. When you walk off and sit outside on your own after the match, that shows it’s all about you and for show."

The Sweden international missed the first play-off game against Derby through injury and was only on the bench as they lost the second leg.

The Verdict

This seems pretty harsh from Whelan as Jansson was undoubtedly one of Leeds' best players this season and his performances were key to their promotion push.

But, you can see why he may annoy people with his actions and the former player clearly isn't a fan.

If they do lose Jansson this summer he will be very hard to replace even if they get a decent fee.
