A surprising new candidate entered the running to become Aston Villa today with the club apparently interested in bringing in Belgium manager Roberto Martinez, if a move for his current assistant Thierry Henry does not materialise. 

The pair led Belgium to the World Cup semi-finals in the summer but now look like they could be in competition with each other for the Villa Park gig.

The club are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Steve Bruce after their midweek draw with Preston North End.

Henry had been made the heavy favourite to take over the vacant position over the weekend and looked set to bring in former Villa defender John Terry as his assistant. 

But Martinez is said to have admirers on the Aston Villa board and is being considered as for the job alongside Henry.

The Spaniard, however, is not too popular among the fans it seems.
