Sunderland manager Jack Ross is one step closer to an immediate return to the Championship, following his side's play-off semi-final win over Portsmouth this week, that sets up a final against Charlton Athletic or Doncaster Rovers at Wembley later this month.

Despite his focus undoubtedly being on that play-off final, Ross may have one eye on reports linking Sheffield Wednesday with the Black Cats' 27-year-old full-back Adam Matthews, according to Football Insider.

So should Sunderland try sort a new deal for Matthews amid the Owls' interest?

We discuss........

George Dagless

"Yes.

"Matthews is a good player and that is underlined by this link.

"You have to wonder, though, if they do not get themselves promoted are they going to be able to keep him? The Owls might well be wise in biding their time."

Louie Chandler

"Only if they are promoted.

"Matthews is reported to be on quite a bit of money and although he is useful it would be reckless to keep him in League One.

"The Black Cats cannot panic this summer, even if they are not promoted, and need a repeat of their business last year."

Gary Hutchinson

“No, let him go.

“They’ve got options and alternatives and Matthews has been average at best.

“He’ll be on decent money too, something the Black Cats might have to be mindful of.

“Cutting Matthews loose won’t be a huge blow.”
