The Chronicle Live (9.35am 3rd July) have issued an update on Stoke City's reported interest in Newcastle winger Matt Ritchie.

The 28-year old is a target for Gary Rowett as he looks to guide Stoke back to the top flight, but the report confirms that as yet, no bids have been made for the Scottish international.

Ritchie joined the Magpies for a fee thought to be around £10m after three successful years with AFC Bournemouth. He's now appeared 89 times for them, scoring 19 goals, but has been heavily linked with a move away this summer.

As well as Stoke, both Middlesbrough and former employer Bournemouth have been linked with a swoop for the player, but it is the Potters who have reportedly had a bid accepted recently.

That has now been confirmed as incorrect and despite claims personal terms have also been agreed, the Chronicle report suggests that no bid has formally been accepted.

Newcastle are thought to want to sell Richie to fund moves for either Kenedy of Chelsea or Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend.

The Verdict

The usual misinformation and speculation is clouding the water here. One party says it is as good as done, the other suggesting there's a long way to go.

Newcastle will want to attract other bids for the player, hoping to drive up the price, whilst Stoke will presumably want it done quickly so they can then look at bids for Shaqiri. Buying a player is like buying a house, you're stuck in a chain and you never really know what stage you're at.
