Despite their mini-wobble in the past three games, Wolves have had a fantastic season and deservedly sit top of the Championship.

Many point to the high-profile signings like Ruben Neves, Diogo Jota and Willy Boly to say Wolves should be winning the league.

However, that’s unfair on Nuno Espirito Santo who has got many of last season’s squad playing at a much higher level.

And, here at FLW we will examine how two of the players from the short-lived Walter Zenga era have got on, looking at Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa.

The duo joined the Black Country club in August 2016 and had a contrasting first 12 months with the club.

Cavaleiro struggled for game time and consistency, only showing occasional flashes of his undoubted quality, with Paul Lambert, who replaced Zenga, not a big fan of the ex-Monaco man.

Meanwhile, Costa flourished and became the undoubted key man at Molineux and the main reason behind survival and a positive FA Cup run, although his season was cut short through injury.

Yet, this season the roles have reversed. Cavaleiro has established himself as a key player under Santo and has a genuine chance of winning Wolves’ player of the year, despite the fierce competition.

As our graphic shows, the Portugal international has performed better than his compatriot in every department. However, it’s the goals and assists that really stand out, with his productivity levels very high.

Even though most player’s stats would struggle against Cavaleiro, there’s no doubt that Costa has failed to hit the heights of last season.

With Wolves now beginning to slow down as the finishing line approaches, Cavaleiro could be the man to drag his side to the Premier League.

Thoughts, Wolves fans? How good has Cavaleiro been this season? Why can’t Costa replicate his form under Paul Lambert? Let us know in the comments below.
