Sheffield Wednesday striker Steven Fletcher has been backed for a new deal at Hillsborough, with Brian Laws of the belief that everything has been clicking for him this season.

Fletcher will see his contract at Hillsborough expire when the summer comes around, but he’s been a shining light in a dull season for Garry Monk’s side in the Championship.

In 25 appearances, the 33-year-old has scored 13 goals and registered two assists, with his form pre-Christmas giving the Owls hope of potentially challenging for the play-offs further down the line.

The form of the Scottish international has been a feature on The Athletic this week, with Brian Laws discussing his form this season.

Laws said: “This season he’s playing out of his skin and everything seems to be clicking in terms of his first touch is excellent, his link-up play is good, he is reliable, he is a good focal point for the team and he has been banging in the goals.

“Of all the strikers that they have available to them, he has performed and that in itself surely justifies a contract, so for me it’s a no-brainer.”

Wednesday currently sit 15th in the Championship table, with back-to-back defeats heading into this forced EFL postponement leaving Monk’s side facing mid-table.

The Verdict

There’s probably little doubt that Fletcher deserves a new contract at Hillsborough, with his form this season giving the club something to be cheerful about.

He might be 33, but is getting better with age, and the fact that so many other players are likely to be looking for a fresh start away from Hillsborough in the coming summer, tying Fletcher down must be a priority.
