Sunderland are still looking to have the desired impact in League One.

After missing out on promotion in the play-off final last season, Phil Parkinson is now at the helm and looking to guide the Black Cats back into the Championship.

Currently, Sunderland sit seventh in the table and outside the play-off places on goal difference and trailing the top-two by only three points.

Parkinson could well lean on the free agent market to bolster his squad before the season ends, whilst that market could be of serious interest to Sunderland in the summer as they look to freshen things up.

Here, we look at some of the names available…

Collins is an experienced centre-back who would add a lot to the squad at the Stadium of Light.

In either the Championship or League One, you feel he would be a good signing.

Another experienced centre-back available is Shackell.

The ex-Lincoln man is available after leaving Sincil Bank and could offer depth to Parkinson's defensive unit.

Lichaj is currently with Hull City, but will see his contract expire in the coming months.

He’d be a sound addition at the Stadium of Light, again, either in the Championship or League One.

Leonard will see his Millwall deal expire at the end of the season and Sunderland would be a better side for having him on board.

He’s got ability to run a midfield and would be a useful addition to Parkinson’s squad.

Johnson is currently at Middlesbrough, but his deal on Teesside is running down.

Sunderland could offer the left-sided player a local move.

It remains to be seen what Leeds United do with the Swiss defender, who is the only out of contract senior player at Elland Road.

If Leeds want to keep Berardi, it appears like he will stay, but if an exit is on the cards and Sunderland is an option, the Stadium of Light could be a great move for the 31-year-old.

Moving to the top of the pitch, Martin is out of contract at Derby County in the summer.

The experienced striker would be a sound addition for anyone at the lower-end of the Championship, so should Sunderland win promotion, he’s definitely a player they should target.

Nuhiu looks like he will become a free agent in the summer, which will interest a lot of English clubs.

The awkward Sheffield Wednesday forward could be a useful asset for Sunderland in 2020/21.

Nuhiu’s ex-teammate Abdi is looking for a new club after departing Sheffield Wednesday.

He’s the wrong side of 30 now and his exploits at Hillsborough don’t suggest he’d be a hit at Sunderland, but if they can get him fit enough, he could be so useful.
