Hull City remain in a relegation scrap in the Championship, with Grant McCann’s side having nine games to save themselves from a disaster that seemed a million miles away at the turn of the year.

McCann had the Tigers on the cusp of the play-offs around the turn of the year, but things have soured massively since January, with Hull sliding deeper and deeper into trouble.

A relegation battle is what is facing Hull when the season eventually gets the green-light to resume, but could McCann bolster his squad with some free agents?

It’s not a path many fancy taking at this time of year, but we are in a unique situation.

So, we assess a few names available…

Van La Parra was a promotion-winner with Huddersfield Town in 2017, but he’s lost his way a little bit since then.

Nevertheless, we know the winger can cut it at this level, which might interest a Hull side still licking their wounds after key January exits.

Ireland is an experienced head that’s played at the top level in terms of the Premier League and international football.

He might not have been at that level for some time, but Hull could well benefit from his experience.

Carroll is a classy midfielder that’s lost his way somewhat in recent years and was released by Swansea earlier in 2020.

His recent decline has raised eyebrows, but at the right place, he could be a useful, useful player.

Collins is another experienced player that’s had a great career.

Yet, he’s now a free-agent and could be a useful addition to the Hull squad at this time.

Injuries were starting to pinch before the postponement, so depth is needed.

Like Collins, Shackell is another experienced head in defence that could be a useful option to the Tigers.

His most recent spell came with Lincoln further down the Football League, but there’s little doubt he could be a useful option to have in and around the Hull squad.

Abdi’s most recent spell in England came with Sheffield Wednesday, but those at Hillsborough never saw the best of the forward.

However, taking a look at him ahead of the season’s resume, which is almost like a pre-season, could be an option.

This is a slightly ambitious shout, but Mikel was in the Championship last season with Middlesbrough.

On a short-term deal, the ex-Chelsea man could be exactly what’s needed to help Hull swerve relegation.

Less high-profile than someone like Mikel would be someone like O’Neil, who has plenty of experience at this level already under his belt.

The midfielder isn’t the most eye-catching addition, but he could be useful for Hull’s squad.

Another ambitious name on this list is ex-West Ham man, Sakho.

He’s not quote cut it since departing East London, but he is a striker that could be a good signing.

A risk, but maybe now is the time for a risk.
