Charlton Athletic's majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer has issued a fresh statement as an off-field battle between himself and chairman Matt Southall continues to rage.

The drama started just over a week ago when Nimer accused Southall of misusing the club's money for his own personal gain and as a result would be pulling his financial contribution until he was gone - Southall denied the claims.

There has been a confusing and ignominious back and forth in the public eye between the duo, with other members of Charlton's backroom staff reportedly coming in to bat for Nimer against their chairman.

Now, however, the Syrian businessman has issued a fresh statement on Instagram, detailing that he plans to remove Southall from his position this week, saying the clash at The Valley between staff members and Southall proved the breaking point.

QUIZ: Can you remember where these 15 ex-Charlton players moved after leaving?

"The events of Thursday evening... have set in motion a sequence which, barring some truly extraordinary events, will end this week with the permanent removal of those persons from the club (Southall and his directors) and the nomination of a new board of directors," he said.

"I cannot give you more information on this as it is still on going but everyone should be assured that... myself and the rest of my team are focusing on Charlton's future as of next week.

"Once a new board of directors has been appointed, we will announce all of our plans for the Club's immediate future and return to the club's official website for future communications."

Prior to the EFL's suspension, Charlton sat in 22nd place, dropping into the relegation zone after losing 1-0 to fellow strugglers Middlesbrough at The Valley.

Their off-field crisis could not have come at a much worse time and it remains to be seen how quickly it will be resolved and whether the club will face punishment as a result of it.

The verdict

Charlton are one side who could potentially stand to benefit from the current suspension of the football season.

It will give Southall, Nimer and everyone else involved in this off-field mess the chance to really thrash things out and hopefully come to the best solution for the club as soon as possible.

It is an ungly affair but if the season is to restart, there is no doubt that the club will better off having sorted things away from the dressing room first.
