Nicky Shorey will be a well known name with both Reading and Aston Villa supporters across England, and his career path has taken him into an interesting direction.

Shorey started his career with Leyton Orient before moving to Reading, where he certainly made a name for himself in Berkshire.

The left-back made 296 appearances in total for the Royals and even earned himself a call-up to the England squad towards the end of his time with Reading.

Shorey made his debut for the national side in a friendly against Brazil before making his second and final appearance for England against Germany later that same year.

He made the Championship team of the season in the same year Reading won the Championship title in the 2005-2006 season with a record 106 points.

That record still stands to this day, and it's unlikely we'll see it beaten anytime soon.

He left Reading in 2008 and moved to Aston Villa where he made 39 appearances in total with (at the time) the Premier League side as they fought in both the top flight and in the UEFA Cup.

His short spell with Villa ended in 2010 when he decided to make the short trip to West Brom where he was a regular in their side for two seasons.

Shorey then made the surprising decision to move back to Reading when they returned to the Premier League, but this spell was short lived as he left the club after just one season.

After brief spells with Portsmouth and Pune City in India, he retired from playing in the 2016-2017 season with non-league side, Hungerford Town.

But in October 2018, he wasted no time in moving on to his next chapter as it was announced that Shorey and former Reading team-mate, Glen Little had taken charge of Isthmian Premier League side, Wingate & Finchley where he is still in charge of the non-league side heading into 2019.
