Nick Powell says that he is "happy" at Wigan Athletic, and the Latics key man is also confident that his side can avoid relegation back to League One.

Paul Cook's side currently sit 19th in the Championship, three points clear of the relegation places, and Powell believes the side have what is required to avoid the drop.

Speaking to Wigan Today about The Latics' hopes of remaining in the second tier, Powell said: “I think we’ll stay up.

“We’ve always had enough quality – it’s just some games haven’t gone for us, and other games we’ve just been poor ourselves."

Discussing the attitude within the Wigan squad, the midfielder added: “I mean, no-one blames each other and everyone accepts the responsibility for the position we are in, so it’s just the case now of fighting for everyone. But we should be able to do it."

Wigan's last game before the international break saw them beat relegation and financially threatened local rivals Bolton 5-2 in a game Powell says they had to win, even if may not mean the club have turned a corner in their season, with the 25-year-old claiming: “I think considering Bolton’s situation...if you didn’t beat them, you would pretty much say that you’re in an absolute scrap.

“I don’t think Bolton was a turning point for us, I just think it was lucky that we had them at the time.”

Powell is out of contract at The DW Stadium in the summer, and though he wouldn't necessarily be drawn on his future, he admitted: “Yeah (I’m happy), I’ve never not been happy at Wigan.

“My recent injury has probably been my worst point, but you just keep going. I wasn’t right at the time, which then amplified my injury and I was out for three long months."

The Verdict

If Wigan are to beat the drop then Powell will surely have a big part to play, so he hearing he is fit and happy will be welcome news to Wigan fans.

It remains to be seen where Powell will be next season, but Championship football must be secured if Wigan are to have any hope of keeping him at The DW Stadium, meaning these next eight games have more significance than ever.
