Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler put in a captain’s performance on Monday night as his side won in Wales to secure a World Cup play off spot, with his club side Hull City offering their congratulations on Twitter.

The 28-year-old bossed the game from the middle of the park, and his battling display inspired the men from the Emerald Isle to the final phase of World Cup qualifying in Europe.

Victory over two legs will ensure Martin O’Neil’s men head to Russia next summer, but Meyler will miss the first of the two legs having picked up a needless yellow card during the clash in Cardiff.

Meyler has been a regular for the Tigers since linking up with the club on a permanent basis in 2013, and has appeared in all eleven of their Championship fixtures this season.
