Having achieved promotion to the third-tier after a three-year spell in the Football League's bottom division, Portsmouth will be looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

The impressive rise of academy graduate Conor Chaplin is overwhelming but the south-coast outfit need to reinforce their front line as they prepare for life in League One, a very difficult division to get out of at the right end.

As well as Eoin Doyle, on loan at Fratton Park from Championship side Preston North End, Pompey may look to permanently have him in Hampshire but in case that doesn't come to fruition, then manager Paul Cook needs a back up plan.

The ideal player to make a punt on this summer is Forest Green Rovers forward Christian Doidge, second highest goal scorer in the National League behind Dover Athletic's Ricky Miller.

The Welshman has been a hit in Gloucestershire since his arrival from Dagenham & Redbridge last summer, scoring 25 goals and providing five assists in his 41 league appearances.

He did sign a two-year deal at The New Lawn but if his employers manage to fail in their attempt to gain promotion, then they may be prepared to cash-in on their most valuable possession.

Whilst Portsmouth should be aiming to obtain as much League One experience as is possible, they need to take risks and this should be the one that Pompey follow through on in the summer transfer window, especially as Doyle is unlikely to have a second spell at the club.

Also, the 24-year-old averages a ratio of one goal every 128 minutes; a record that only a few can boast about and with better equipped players around him, then there's no reason why Doidge can't be a hit at Fratton Park.
