According to the Daily Mail, Fulham will face difficulty in retaining the service of Tom Cairney during the summer transfer window, with promotion-chasing Newcastle United keen to secure his signature.

Cairney has impressed at Craven Cottage this season, scoring nine goals and bagging a further nine assists, helping Slavisa Jokanovic’s side to seventh in the Sky Bet Championship.

Newcastle are currently top of the table and looking to secure an instant return to the Premier League, which if they succeed, could play a major part in tempting Cairney to St James’ Park.

Rafa Benitez’s side are currently one-point clear of Brighton and Hove Albion, and hold a seven-point cushion to third placed Huddersfield Town, with just eight fixtures of the Championship season remaining.

Newcastle recently suffered a defeat to Fulham, where Cairney played a vital role for Jokanovic’s side, and it now seems Benitez is keen to add the 26-year old to his squad.

Cairney has failed to inspire Fulham to break into the top-six, as they recently missed out on two opportunities to overtake Sheffield Wednesday, by drawing with Blackburn Rovers and suffering a defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, leaving the Cottagers two-points behind Carlos Carvalhal’s side.

Fulham fans… How much of a blow would it be to lose Cairney during the summer?
