Newcastle United are set to step up their pursuit of a striker this week, with Salomon Rondon a man firmly on Rafa Benitez’s radar at this stage of the summer.

According to a report from the Chronicle Live, Benitez is looking to make progress in the coming week, as he looks to bolster his strikeforce at St James’ Park.

Rondon is an option for the Magpies, with the West Bromwich Albion forward reportedly available at £16.5m.

The 28-year-old has been with West Brom for three years now, making 108 Premier League appearances for the Baggies, which have returned 24 goals.

A further four goals have come in the FA Cup and League Cup, with Rondon establishing himself as a useful top-flight striker.

However, last season, Rondon couldn’t prevent West Brom slipping into a relegation battle in the top-flight, with the Baggies losing their Premier League status at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

Rondon featured in 36 of West Brom’s 38 Premier League fixtures, returning seven goals and a further three assists for the Baggies.

Darren Moore is now preparing his West Brom squad for a return to the Championship.

The Verdict

Despite West Brom’s struggles in the Premier League, Rondon is still a good striker and would be an excellent option for Newcastle and Benitez.

From West Brom’s point of view, if Rondon is going to leave this summer, they need the best price and to get him out of the door as soon as possible.

At £16.5m, the 28-year-old’s departure would be good for all parties involved.
