Championship side Newcastle United are in talks with Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark after activating the centre back’s release clause, according to the Daily Mail.
The 26-year-old is man in demand at the moment with midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion chasing the Republic of Ireland international. They look set to be beaten to him with Newcastle set to win the race.
A £5 million release clause has been met which will see Clark swoop into Tyneside for talks in the next 24 hours and will hope to seal a move to join up with Rafa Benitez in his promotion quest.
Benitez is short on centre back’s heading into the new season with only Jamaal Lascelles, Chancel Mbemba and Grant Hanley in the first team picture to rely on as it stands.
Clark could reject an approach however and hold out for a Premier League move, or stay with Villa and help Roberto Di Matteo in his own promotion chase.
