Newcastle United are believed to be interested in a deal to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien according to a recent report from The Sun.
O’Brien has caught the eye with some strong performances for the Terriers in recent seasons, with the midfielder making 40 appearances in all competitions this term for the Yorkshire-based side.
He has chipped in with three goals and three assists for Huddersfield Town this season, in what has been a hugely frustrating league campaign under the management of Carlos Corberan.
The Terriers are currently sat 20th in the Championship table, and find themselves eight points clear of the relegation zone, with it seeming likely that they’ll retain their status as a club in the second-tier for another season.
It appears as though O’Brien’s strong showings haven’t gone unnoticed though, with Newcastle United believed to be keen on a deal to land his signature in the summer transfer window.
Steve Bruce’s side have shown much-needed improvement in recent weeks, which means they’re now sat 16th in the Premier League table, and nine points clear of the relegation zone.
It is claimed by The Sun that the Magpies are looking at an alternative to Joe Willock heading into the summer, with O’Brien being seen as a cheaper alternative, with Arsenal valuing Willock at £20million.
O’Brien and his Huddersfield Town team-mates are set to return to action this weekend, when they take on Coventry City at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Does the John Smith's Stadium have a higher or lower capacity than these 18 grounds?
I think this will be a tempting move for O’Brien.
He’s really impressed me since coming into the Huddersfield Town starting XI, and I think he’s more than capable of making the step up to the Premier League ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.
Newcastle aren’t likely to pay Arsenal’s asking price for Joe Willock, so it makes sense for the Magpies to look at an alternative option heading into the summer transfer window.
O’Brien still has plenty of time to fulfil his potential, and I think he’d be able to do that with Newcastle United. It’ll be interesting to see how much Huddersfield Tow demand for his services.
