Newcastle United receive more frustrating news which could end their title challenge

Newcastle United’s official website have confirmed that Matt Ritchie’s season is over, with the midfielder to serve a two-match suspension with immediate effect.

Ritchie was involved in a confrontation with a match official in the tunnel after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Good Friday, which has resulted in a suspension for the Scottish international.

The news is a frustrating blow for Rafa Benitez, whose side are aiming to overhaul Brighton and Hove Albion in the coming weeks and clinch the Sky Bet Championship title.

Ritchie has played a key role at St James’ Park this season, scoring 16 goals across all competitions and helping Newcastle to promotion in the Championship.

Monday’s 4-1 victory over Preston North End, another occasion Ritchie was particularly impressive, confirmed Benitez’s side would return to the Premier League.

The Magpies are now just four-points behind Brighton, and with two fixtures of the season remaining, they are looking to defy the odds by beating the Seagulls to the title.

Benitez’s side face Cardiff City and Barnsley in their remaining fixtures.

Newcastle fans… Are you disappointed to see Ritchie suspended for the remainder of the season? Let us know in the comments!
