Newcastle United receive major blow amid busy festive period

Newcastle’s influential midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has received a five match ban and been hit with a £100,000 fine, the club’s official website confirmed earlier.

The ban comes in relation to an incident in Newcastle’s clash with Wolves in September, with Shelvey making a racially aggravated comment towards an opponent, who is believed to be Romain Sass.

Shelvey will miss games against promotion rivals Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City, but he will return ahead of the top of the table crunch match with Brighton.

Shelvey has been a driving force in the Newcastle midfield since his arrival at St James’ Park last season, so his presence in midfield will be sorely missed and it may force Rafa Benitez’s hand into dipping into the transfer market.

The suspension comes at a tough time for Newcastle, with Brighton breathing down their necks, they needed their star man playing week in week out, to try and keep them at arms length.

Newcastle fans… What are your thoughts on this? Is it a fair ban? How much will you miss him during his suspension? Let us know your thoughts below!
