Stoke City defender Erik Pieters is thought to be open to a move to Newcastle United in the January transfer window, report the Chronicle

However, they also report that Rafa Benitez would face a challenge in persuading the board to part with a sizeable fee for a 30-year-old.

The Magpies were interested in bringing in the Dutchman during the summer transfer window, but a deal never materialised.

But with Paul Dummett suffering an injury whilst on international duty, their interest could be reignited during the winter window.

Gary Rowett's side are struggling in the Championship this season after being relegated from the Premier League last May.

They currently sit in 14th place despite being made convincing pre-season favourites to win the title before a ball was kicked.

Despite this, Pieters has had an impressive season at left-back for the Potters, racking up two goals and one assist in 15 appearances in the league.

Stoke host Queens Park Rangers on Saturday and will hope to close the gap on their play-off rivals with a win.

The Verdict

This would be a huge blow for Rowett.

In a season when inconsistencies within his squad have been the biggest problem, Pieters has been consistently solid at left-back.

Losing him would just be another step towards a spectacular fail of a season.
