Newcastle United are preparing to make a bid for Salomon Rondon, according to The Mirror’s Live Transfer Blog [Monday 9th July, 20:28].
The 28-year-old has spent three years with West Brom, scoring 28 goals in 119 appearances in all competitions.
Last season, Rondon hit 10 goals – including seven in the Premier League – but he could not prevent his side from suffering relegation to the second tier.
The Venezuela international is said to be interested in remaining in the top flight so a move to Newcastle could appeal to him.
The Magpies are trying to sign a new striker and they will have to break their transfer record to land Rondon.
West Brom want to keep Rondon and Jay Rodriguez but both are attracting a lot of Premier League attention.
It looks like West Brom will be unable to hold onto Rondon given his release clause.
But this money can be reinvested in a striker who can score plenty of goals at Championship level.
As for Newcastle, I am not sure why they wouldn’t just use Aleksandar Mitrovic as their physical centre-forward instead of spending all this money on Rondon.
