Swansea City have slapped a £10m price tag on Federico Fernandez amid interest from Newcastle United, according to The Sun.

Newcastle are keen on the Swansea centre-back but would prefer to land him on loan.

But Swansea are not willing to let Fernandez leave on loan and would demand a fee of £10m if they are to let him go permanently.

Despite already signing Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna, Rafa Benitez wants another centre-back.

The Magpies sold Chancel Mbemba to FC Porto and Jamal Lascelles is attracting interest from other Premier League sides, meaning that Newcastle are considering centre-back targets.

Fernandez, 29, joined the Swans in 2014 from Napoli and has since played over 100 games in the top flight.

The 32-cap Argentina international, who stands at 6ft 3in tall, is also wanted by Russian side Krasnodar.

The Verdict

This is good business by Swansea.

Having already lost Kyle Bartley and with Alfie Mawson likely to depart, they cannot afford to sell another defender unless the transfer fee makes it worth it.

Fernandez would be a very good Championship defender but if a club is willing to stump up £10m for him, it is time to part ways and reinvest that money in another centre-back.
