Newcastle United have confirmed that young defender Kell Watts has completed a loan move to League Two side Stevenage.

The 19-year-old will join Dino Maamria's side on a season-long loan deal for the 2019/20 season, and could make his debut for the club when they travel to Leyton Orient on Saturday afternoon.

Watts was included in the Magpies' squad for their Premier League Asia Trophy campaign last month, during which he made his senior debut for the club against Wolves.

This came after he impressed for Newcastle's Under-23 side last term by making 39 appearances and scoring six goals over the course of the season as they reached the Premier League Cup final and the Premier League 2 Division Two play-off final.

This is the first time Watts has been sent out on loan since joining Newcastle's academy set-up, and he will now be tasked with bolstering a Stevenage side who have lost their first two league matches this season.

The verdict

This should be a perfect move for Watts as he is now in need of regular first-team experience after a full season playing for Newcastle's development side.

The fact he was handed his senior debut last month shows he is highly regarded on Tyneside, and a successful loan move could really help him develop and push for the first team.

It also appears Stevenage are in need of reinforcement after a disappointing start to the season, so I would expect Watts to be given a fair chance to prove himself at the Lamex Stadium.

He possesses a wide skill set as he is strong in the air and can also play the ball out from the back, which means he could really turn into a top player for Newcastle in the future.
