On Tuesday evening, Newcastle United suffered their second defeat on the bounce to Premier League side Hull City in the EFL Cup Quarter final, Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez was left frustrated by Newcastle's wastefulness in front of goal, after speaking to BBC Newcastle.

The high-flying Championship side dominated large proportions of the match, showing their pedigree and ability to compete comfortably with Premier League sides already at this stage of the season.

In an opening half exchange, Newcastle held 60% of possession and quadrupled Hull City's attempts at goal.

Following a dominant first half performance, it appeared that there was only one apparent outcome: a Newcastle win.

This looked even more likely after Dieumerci Mbokani was sent off for headbutting Jamaal Lascelles in the 89th minute.

Mo Diame did open the scoring in extra time but Robert Snodgrass instantly replied and Hull City went on to win the match on penalties after Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle and Yoan Gouffran all failed to score.

Having had 32 attempts on goal and over 60% possession, Rafa Benitez felt aggrieved that his side was on the receiving end of a defeat and it was reflected in his post-match comments when a despondent Benitez was interviewed by BBC Radio Newcastle:

“We deserved to win, Penalties are a lottery. It's something we have to learn from. When you do well, you have to finish the openings. We were much better in the first half and we had a lot of chances, but we have to score more goals,".

"After extra-time we had a lot of chances, but we made mistakes in terms of managing the situation. We have to have more experience and control these things."

Rafa Benitez will now have the difficult task of picking up the morale after back to back defeats when they travel to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest.
