Up to six clubs are chasing a loan deal for Newcastle United youngster Freddie Woodman, The Chronicle understands.

Woodman is wanted by six unnamed clubs, although The Chronicle has revealed that two are from the Scottish Premiership while one Championship side and three League One teams are also in the hunt.

The England youth international has recently starred for his country's under-21 side at the Toulon Tournament, helping the young Lions to the title.

Woodman impressed during the competition and now clubs are lining up swoops to take him on a season-long loan deal, which appeals to the goalkeeper.

The 21-year-old has previously had loan spells with Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen and he is ready to head out on loan again with his route to the first-team at St James' Park looking blocked.

The Magpies recently snapped Martin Dubravka up on a permanent deal and with Rob Elliot, Karl Darlow and Matz Sels also on their books, it appears Woodman has little chance of making a senior appearance.

After being part of last summer's England under-20 side who won the World Cup for their age group and impressing in the Scottish top flight for Aberdeen, Woodman is not short of potential suitors this summer.

The Verdict

Perhaps the next best step in his career would be to test himself at Championship level.

This would be a real test of whether the Newcastle prospect has what it takes to make it at the top level.

Another loan in the Scottish Premiership could be beneficial and game time in League One would also help his progress but he would really test himself in the Championship and that could be a wise career move at such a vital stage in his development.
