Isaac Hayden has urged Newcastle United to continue to focus on the next game, as their promotion prospects continue to improve, reports the Chronicle Live.

Last weekend’s results favoured the Magpies, as they took another step towards automatic promotion in the Sky Bet Championship by opening up a ten-point lead over third-placed Huddersfield Town.

Goals from Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie handed Rafa Benitez’s side a 2-1 victory over Wigan Athletic, which combined with Town’s defeat to Burton Albion, left the Magpies in a comfortable position for a top-two finish.

Burton visit St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening and will be full of confidence following their victory at Huddersfield, which has led to Hayden urging his teammates to focus on the next game rather than their commanding league position, he said:

“It’s not about thinking about the gap between first, second and third.

“The main thing for us is to take each game as it comes.

“We can’t get ahead of ourselves or underestimate Burton.

“That is the next game and we have to be fully focused for that game.”

Benitez’s side currently hold a one-point lead over second-placed Brighton and Hove Albion, but could find themselves behind the Seagulls in less than 24-hours, with Chris Hughton’s side facing Birmingham City this evening.

The Magpies know victory over Burton tomorrow, will see them maintain their lead at the top of the table.
