Newcastle United keen on out of contract international defender

Published

It has emerged from an exclusive report by the Sunderland Echo that arch rivals Newcastle United and Sunderland are set to compete for Stade Rennais’ out of contract Senegalese defender, Cheikhou M’Bengue.

As M’Bengue’s contract is set to come to its conclusion, the Senegalese international has been attracting attention from not only across the Premier League and Championship but also across Europe.

It has been reported that as well as Newcastle and Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Bundesliga side Hamburg have all expressed their interest in signing the 27-year-old defender.

In a recent interview M’Bengue explicitly stated that he had received offers from both Sunderland and Newcastle but he remains undecided with what he should do in the next stage of his career.

It is yet to be seen what M’Bengue does next but he would potentially prove to be a low risk low cost option considering whichever club that picks him up would only have to pay for his wages.

Newcastle fans, how do you feel about the news? Would you like to see M’Bengue sign? Is the left back position, a position that needs addressing? What do you make of Newcastle’s recruitment so far? Let us hear your thoughts and opinions in the comment section below!
