Newcastle United are expected to finalise the signing of Salomon Rondon from West Bromwich Albion this week on an initial loan deal to be made permanent next summer, according to TEAMtalk.

Rondon has a £16.5m release clause in his contract, which would have forced Newcastle to smash their transfer record to land him this summer, but they have offered a different package deal.

The Magpies are offering an initial loan fee of £4m before adding a further £15m next summer for his permanent services, meaning the deal will be worth up to £19m.

Rondon wants a move to the Premier League and he is expected to replace Fulham-bound Aleksandar Mitrovic up top for Newcastle.

The Venezuela international netted seven Premier League goals last season and a further three in cup competitions.

With a total of 28 goals in three seasons at West Brom, the 28-year-old is set to move on and remain as a Premier League player.

The Verdict

I am not sure why Newcastle have arranged a deal which sees them pay more than his release clause.

But without looking at the price, it is also a peculiar deal because he is just going to be a like-for-like replacement for Mitrovic.

Mitrovic is equally powerful but he scores more goals than Rondon and is much younger so this move does not make too much sense to me.
