Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce was on his travels yesterday during the international break, as he was spotted taking in the action as Crewe Alexandra defeated Peterborough United.

Bruce was seated alongside his son Alex as two excited young teams pitted their wits against one another, and it's thought that he was there to check out one particularly exciting player.

According to Peterborough's local reporter Alan Swann, Siriki Dembele is the man that he was most likely there to take in, but he would have left disappointed as by all accounts, the attacker put in a poor performance.

24-year-old Dembele has started the season on fire in League One, notching five goals and four assists in just 11 outings for Posh and has formed up a prolific partnership with Ivan Toney's replacement Jonson Clarke-Harris.

Darren Ferguson converted Dembele into a striker last season after being mainly used as a winger, and whilst the latter position is probably his strongest, the London-born Scot seems to have no issues in playing up-top.

If he carries on the form he's shown at the start of the season, Dembele will continue to attract attention from the upper echelons of the footballing pyramid, but maybe his poor performance yesterday came down to him being aware that Bruce was in the building.

The Verdict

There's absolutely no doubt that Dembele has had an exciting start to the season, and he comes from a clearly talented family with his younger brother Karamoko being one of Celtic's most highly-rated youngsters.

Could he make the step up to the Premier League in the near future though?

Well it's no surprise to see him flying in League One, but he may not have the physicality required to be a success in the top-flight.

A potential move to a top Championship team in January or the summer seems much more likely for Dembele, although both Darragh MacAnthony and Barry Fry have both recently said they do not want to sell the diminutive winger.
