Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez remains unsure whether the club will make any additions to their squad this month, reports the Daily Star.

The Magpies have failed to sign anybody this January as they aim for an instant return to the Premier League.

Callum Wilson, Mo Barrow and Andros Townsend have all been linked with the club this window, as Benitez looks to strengthen his attacking options.

Sky Sports reported discussions had taken place between the club and Crystal Palace over a proposed swap-deal for Townsend, who left Newcastle last summer, and Chancel Mbemba.

However, Benitez does not believe that deal has made any progress.

"There has not been any progress [on Mbemba loan swap deal with Townsend]," said Benitez.

“At the moment, I do not have news one way or the other.

“We have our targets but we don’t know if we can get them.

The former Liverpool and Chelsea manager has stated all January about his desire to add to his current squad, especially in attacking areas- this is despite Newcastle hosting the best attacking record in the Sky Bet Championship this season.

Sammy Ameobi was re-called from a loan spell at Bolton Wanderers as Benitez looked to add depth to his forward line.

One player expected to leave Newcastle before the close of the transfer window is midfielder Cheick Tiote.

Benitez’s side are currently second in the Championship, trailing leaders Brighton and Hove Albion by just two-points.

They are aiming to return to the top of the table on Wednesday night as they face QPR at St James’ Park.
