Any hope that Sunderland may have had about rekindling a move for reported summer target Kara Mbodji looks like it will be diminishing as a host of Premier League clubs circle around the in-demand star.

According to an exclusive report by Turkish Football, Kara Mbodji is attracting the attention of up to seven clubs from the top flight of English football, which is likely to end any potential interest shown by the Black Cats.

Sunderland were reportedly interested in signing Kara in the summer transfer window.

During the summer, The Chronicle reported that Kara was a target for the North East outfit, who hoped to bring in the defender on loan for the Championship season.

But now a number of Premier League sides are eyeing a January move for the Anderlecht centre half.

Sunderland's bitter local rivals Newcastle United are among the sides weighing up a move for the 27-year-old, who has featured on fourteen occasions for Anderlecht so far this season,  when the January transfer window re-opens.

Kara's agent, Ediz Balkan, revealed that discussions have taken place with representatives from Newcastle United as well as Leicester City, Swansea City, Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion.

It is thought that another two unnamed Premier League clubs could also be in the hunt, as well as interest from Spain and Italy.

The Verdict

Although Kara would undoubtedly be a strong addition, Sunderland need to stop spending and try to make use of their squad.

They will not be able to compete with these top flight clubs financially and spending £10m on a Belgian-based defender is not Sunderland's priority.

Currently sitting rock bottom of the second tier, a new manager is needed as soon as possible and he will then decide who stays, goes and arrives at The Stadium of Light.
