Speaking to the Daily Mail, Dwight Gayle has confirmed he reached all his personal targets in the Sky Bet Championship this season, but is aiming to “push on” at St James’ Park in the top-flight next year.

Gayle bagged his 23rd goal of the campaign in Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Barnsley, which secured Rafa Benitez’s side the Championship title.

The 26-year old’s goalscoring form is particularly impressive when you consider he has missed the majority of the second-half of the season with reoccurring hamstring injuries.

Having joined the Magpies in a £10m deal from Crystal Palace in the summer, Gayle insisted promotion was the main aim along with his personal targets, before admitting he hopes to push on and put injury troubles behind him in the top-flight, he said:

“The most important thing for us was to get back up, but you have your personal targets and I reached that. Hopefully, I can push on for next season.

“I've had some bad times with my hamstrings and it was probably best for me to just sit it out, but obviously I always want to be playing and to miss this last day would have been gutting.”

The Magpies defied all odds by clinching the Championship title on the final day of the season, after Brighton were red-hot favourites, requiring just one victory from their final three league fixtures.

However, two defeats and a final day draw with Aston Villa, combined with three consecutive victories for Newcastle, saw Benitez’s side finish a point clear of their South-Coast rivals.

Newcastle fans… Will Gayle be your club’s main man next season? Or will Benitez look to replace the injury prone star? Let us know you thoughts!
