According to The Chronicle, Newcastle United will turn down the chance to sign striker Dimitar Berbatov so that they can focus on other transfer targets this January.

The 35-year-old offered his services to the Magpies as he continues to search for a new club.

The former Bulgarian international – who has 78 caps for his country – has vast experience of playing football in England and is thought to favour a return.

The talented striker played for Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Fulham in his eight years in England.

Berbatov was renowned for his technical ability and laid back approach.

The veteran forward was most recently playing for PAOK Salonika in Greece and he has been looking for another challenge since leaving the club in June.

However, he is not being considered by Newcastle, according to this report, as Benitez appears to be happy with his options up front and has concerns over Berbatov’s age.
